Latvian Prime Minister Resigns Amid Drone Crisis

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has resigned from her position in the wake of a crisis involving drones in the country’s airspace.

It is worth noting that the political crisis in Latvia was triggered by the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, a representative of the Progressives party. He was dismissed after two drones (reportedly of Ukrainian origin) infiltrated Latvian airspace. The drones were not intercepted, resulting in them landing in the territory of an oil depot in the city of Rēzekne.

The government faced criticism for failing to shoot down the drones. To replace Sprūds, Siliņa has proposed Colonel Raivis Melnisis, effectively taking over the ministerial portfolio from the Progressives.

In response, the party has called on President Edgars Rinkēvičs to initiate consultations and search for a new prime minister.
