NVP Course in Schools to Be Replaced by Different Subject: Project
Changes are being proposed in Armenia's educational system concerning various subject fields. Currently, the state educational standards for general education are fully implemented in Tavush province and in all schools across the country, except for the 12th grade. This is reported by the Fact newspaper.
The new draft proposes to revise the domain of "Physical Education and Safe Living Activities." In particular, the analysis of the "Initial Military Training" (NVP) course has shown that it mainly focuses on military training, inadequately addressing students' skills in emergencies, information security, and collective safety issues.
To address this, it is proposed that the NVP taught in the 8th grade be replaced with the subject "Safe Living Activities," which will be introduced starting from the 5th grade. This change will allow for a phased approach to building knowledge on responding to natural, technological, epidemic, and military situations. The practical part of the subject will be deepened in high school through educational camps.
During the implementation of these programs, other issues have also been raised, such as the chronological inconsistencies of topics between different subjects, repetitions of material, and disproportionate study loads. It is noted that in some cases, this hinders the development of key competencies, while interdisciplinary connections and modern security challenges are not sufficiently incorporated.
Additionally, starting from the 2026–2027 academic year, it is intended to make the "Healthy Lifestyle" component, which was previously a mandatory group, into a mandatory subject. The aim is to cultivate values, knowledge, and appropriate behavioral skills related to health among students.
