Navalny Dies from Poisoning: Details
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died from epibatidine poisoning, according to a joint statement from the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
“Our governments have reached this conclusion based on the analysis of samples taken from Alexei Navalny. These tests have unequivocally confirmed the presence of epibatidine. Epibatidine is a toxin found in the poisonous dart frogs of South America. It does not occur naturally in Russia.
Russia has announced that Navalny died of natural causes. However, considering the toxicity of epibatidine and the described symptoms, the cause of his death was most likely poisoning. Navalny died in prison, which indicates that Russia had the means, motive, and opportunity to administer this poison to him,” the document published on the UK government's website states.
These findings “once again underscore the necessity of holding Russia accountable for multiple violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention and, in this case, the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention,” they concluded.
