European Commission's Plan to Completely Halt Russian Gas Imports
The European Commission is set to introduce a law within a month that will prevent signing new gas contracts with Russia. Short-term purchases are to be halted by the end of 2025, while long-term contracts will end by 2027. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
The announcement came today in Strasbourg. According to this plan, imports of Russian fossil fuels will be completely ceased by 2027. The publication of a step-by-step 'road map' has been postponed twice. This time it is presented in a general form, with official legislative proposals to be released in a month, stated EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.
The gradual transition plan from energy sources in the Russian Federation, called REPowerEU, includes several legislative changes at the EU level and mandatory national plans by the end of 2025, the Commissioner clarified.
