Simplified Customs Corridor to Operate at Armenia–Iran Border

A "Simplified Customs Corridor" will be launched between Armenia and Iran, according to the Armenian government.

The justification for the project states that in order to simplify customs control and procedures for law-abiding economic operators, a proposal was received from the Iranian side regarding the implementation of a "Simplified Customs Corridor" at the Armenia-Iran border, along with a corresponding project for its realization.

It is expected that for the purpose of applying the "Simplified Customs Corridor," the parties will exchange information electronically about goods, vehicles, and participants in foreign economic activity, including freight carriers and their employees, in accordance with conditions set forth in an agreement.

The "Simplified Customs Corridor" is intended for those whose activities are characterized by low risk of violating customs legislation. The simplifications will apply to all types of vehicles, except for personal use vehicles, and all kinds of goods for Armenian and Iranian entities wishing to utilize the "Simplified Customs Corridor" on a voluntary basis.

The main objective of the implementation of the "Simplified Customs Corridor" is to create more favorable conditions for compliant participants in foreign economic activities, particularly by accelerating customs controls and procedures related to goods in customs authorities, reducing the required documentation, and decreasing the forms and volumes of customs control over goods based on the analysis of information received about goods within the framework of a risk management system. This will lead to a significant reduction in the clearance and waiting times for goods at the border.

Additionally, the ongoing modernization process of the Meghri border checkpoint is of significant importance in the context of the implementation and launch of the "Simplified Customs Corridor" to ensure necessary building conditions, infrastructural capacities, and technical readiness. Therefore, the full implementation of the "Simplified Customs Corridor" will only be possible after the completion of the ongoing construction work.
