The EU Becomes an Increasingly Important Security Partner, Says Deputy Foreign Minister
During a session of the permanent committee on European integration in the National Assembly, Deputy Foreign Minister Paruir Hovhannisyan, in response to a question from Armenia's parliamentary member Armen Gevorgyan regarding security sector expectations from the EU, stated that the EU is becoming an increasingly important partner in the field of security.
“Two meetings have already been held, and we are discussing other formats under the auspices of that dialogue, where more active work on defense and security issues should begin. This is based on the fact that the security sector was not included in the new partnership agenda currently under discussion. Of course, this is also related to the operations of missions functioning under the EU's common and security defense policy, and a contract is now ready to be signed, which will be done soon,” he said.
According to the Deputy Foreign Minister, the deployment of EU observers in the security sector should also be viewed as a crucial factor. “I am confident you are also aware that serious discussions are currently taking place in the EU to strengthen that sector, which will open up new horizons for cooperation with the EU specifically in this field,” added Hovhannisyan.
