David Copperfield Accused of Sexual Assault
At least 16 women claim that illusionist and magician David Copperfield sexually assaulted them and behaved inappropriately. This is reported by The Guardian, whose journalists have investigated the incidents.
According to the women, the illusionist coerced them into having intimate relations with him. He also allegedly forced several of them to use drugs so that they could not resist.
As noted by The Guardian, the events described by the victims occurred from the late 1980s to 2014. During this time, most of the girls who say they were sexually assaulted were not yet of legal age.
One of the alleged victims, Brittany Lewis, publicly stated back in 2018 that Copperfield drugged her and then raped her in 1988. At that time, according to the woman, she was just 17 years old and working as a model.
Following this revelation, another woman admitted that the illusionist had treated her and her friend in a similar manner. The survivor stated that she would never have spoken about it publicly if she were not certain that she had been drugged.
In other cases, women reported that the magician had harassed them and behaved inappropriately during his performances. Parents of some of the 15-year-old victims also witnessed Copperfield's assaults, The Guardian writes.
One of the women lodged a complaint with the police after Copperfield's actions, but her report was not taken seriously, even though video footage of the scandalous performance was available. The Guardian's editors contacted law enforcement agencies and the magician’s attorneys, requesting the footage of the performance, but received no response.
The publication also revealed that in many cases, the illusionist promised girls he had intimate relationships with career advancement in the modeling business.
David Copperfield, 67, denied the allegations made against him in an interview with the publication.
