German Chancellor Says When the War in Ukraine Will End
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged the West to continue supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, stating on Saturday that Germany will not relent in its efforts to assist Kyiv, according to Reuters.
Speaking at a gathering of European Social Democrats in Bucharest, Scholz said that the best way to prevent any escalation, including a potential conflict between Russia and NATO, is through “effective deterrence.”
“The war in Ukraine will end when (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin decides to withdraw his troops. However, he will only make this decision if he understands that he cannot win the war on the battlefield,” Scholz stated. His country has so far provided Ukraine with 28 billion euros in military support.
“That is why we Europeans are investing more in our security and defense so that no one dares to attack us. This also means setting aside narrow personal interests and building a strong and truly European defense industry,” he added.
