Zakharyova on Neonazi Marches in Central Yerevan
Russian officials have expressed regret that Armenian authorities and law enforcement have not adequately responded to a march by nationalistic youth in central Yerevan. This statement was made by Maria Zakharyova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“We received with deep concern the march of nationalists that took place on January 1 in the center of Yerevan. We are, of course, surprised that Armenian law enforcement did not obstruct the participants of the gathering who openly displayed their orientation in front of cameras and media, raising their hands in a Nazi salute,” Zakharyova said.
According to her, Russia is convinced that it is necessary to eradicate any manifestations of Nazism. She also added that almost 80 years ago, Russians and Armenians, along with representatives of other nations, united to defeat fascism during World War II. She noted that Armenia, along with other ally countries of Russia, annually supports the Russian resolution at the UN General Assembly against the glorification of Nazism and neonazism.
“We are aware of our friends, our brothers' principled stance in Armenia. Preserving historical truth is a true tool to prevent the resurgence of the brown plague,” she stated.
It is worth recalling that on January 1, supporters gathered near the statue of General Garegin Nzhdeh, chanting slogans such as “Always Armenian” after speeches were delivered.
