Armenian Genocide Memorial Defaced in London
The Armenian Genocide Memorial in Ealing, London, was defaced just ten days after its opening on September 23. This was reported on the social media platform X by the Armenian National Committee of Great Britain.
It is noted that on the day of the memorial's opening, a group of masked extremists unfurled Turkish flags near the memorial and displayed the ‘Grey Wolves’ gesture, attempting to intimidate the Armenian community. “The Grey Wolves gesture is morally equivalent to a Nazi salute,” stated Anet Moskovian, the chair of the Armenian National Committee of Great Britain.
According to Moskovian, just ten days after its inauguration, the memorial was vandalized with bright yellow paint, and the word ‘Genocide’ inscribed on the plaque was scratched off, as if someone was trying to erase that specific word. “For me personally, it feels like history is repeating itself. The idea of one nation, two states between Turkey and Azerbaijan means that the Azerbaijani regime wants to complete what the Ottomans started in 1915, and the fact that there are people in Britain who share these ideas makes us feel threatened,” she said.
Fortunately, the memorial is monitored by cameras, and the police are actively investigating the incident as a hate crime. Moskovian expressed confidence that the perpetrators would be held accountable and serve as a deterrent.
