Armenia is One of Russia's Closest Allies, Says Russian Foreign Ministry

Armenia is one of Russia's closest allies and a strategic partner in the South Caucasus, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry dedicated to the anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance signed between Russia and Armenia in 1997.

The announcement emphasized, "This document marked the beginning of a modern phase in the inter-state relations between our countries. In particular, Russia and Armenia agreed to strengthen traditional friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation in political, economic, military, scientific, cultural, and other fields. Our countries have also committed to collaborate to enhance stability and security both in the South Caucasus region and globally."

The signing of the agreements created conditions for the expansion of Russian-Armenian political dialogue and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in trade, economics, science, technology, humanitarian issues, and more. Subsequently, the legal framework of our relations has been expanded to include over 200 documents, with systematic work ongoing to catalog them.

At the present stage, Russian-Armenian relations continue to develop based on the principles enshrined in the 1997 agreement, including mutual respect for state sovereignty and independence, equality, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, as well as the non-use or threat of force. "Armenia today is one of Russia's closest allies, our country's strategic partner in the South Caucasus," the statement concluded.
