ZCMC Provides Clarification Regarding the Lichk Mine

The Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) has presented clarifications concerning the possible re-exploitation of the Lichk mine. The Combine pointed out that until 2018, the Lichk mine was operated by the company TATSSTOON LLC. Hence, Lichk is not a newly opened mine; substantial preparatory works were conducted there prior to 2018.

In 2021, TATSSTOON's mining rights were revoked, and considering that the mine has assessed reserves, any company could apply for a mining exploitation license. It is also important to note that significant resources of ZCMC were utilized by TATSSTOON for extraction, and ZCMC did not receive any compensation for their usage. Currently, TATSSTOON is practically inactive and is undergoing bankruptcy proceedings due to substantial debts owed to ZCMC.

Regarding environmental protection, ZCMC emphasized that significant works have been carried out in the mine area and that the exploitation was halted without proper closure. 'Abandoned mines without proper closure pose significant environmental risks. Proper management of environmental components (soil, water, air, biodiversity) can not only be economically beneficial for the state, but also help prevent further environmental degradation in the area,' stated the Combine.

ZCMC plans to process the ore at the Kajaran enrichment factory, thereby excluding the construction of production units and tailings facilities in the Meghri region.
