This Law is Moscow's Demand: Georgia's President's Address
The President of Georgia is currently on an official visit in New York, but upon learning about the mass protests in the capital, she has issued a statement expressing support for the opposition, reports newsgeorgia.ge.
"I appeal to those who are standing in Rustaveli tonight, as they have stood many times before. I stand here in New York, with the Statue of Liberty behind me. Freedom is a symbol for which Georgia has always fought… I am with you. Today, you represent a free Georgia. A Georgia that sees its future in Europe will not allow anyone to take this future away. This future belongs to our next generation. This is the future prepared by previous generations, and we have prepared it. No one has the right to take your future from you. No one has the right to set traps.
This law is unnecessary for anyone; it has been taken from nowhere but Moscow's demand. This must be canceled. It should not be sent to the Venice Commission in any way. They know very well what kind of law this is. From the very first day, I said there would be a veto. And there will be a veto.
I am not interested in discussing it article by article or its similarity to an old American law, which, as we all know, serves quite a different purpose. I am only interested in Georgia's future, only the constitution, of which I am the guarantor, and this constitution states that all institutions of Georgia, first and foremost I, the government, the authorities, must do everything to bring this country to the European Union and defend the path of European integration. The supporters and those who vote in favor of this law today are violating the constitution. You are removing all of us from Europe," said the president.
It is worth noting that yesterday, special forces used water cannons to disperse the protest in front of the parliament in Tbilisi. The gathered people protested against the adoption of the foreign agents law.
