Presidential and Parliamentary Elections to Be Held in Turkey
The presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey will take place on May 14, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced during a meeting with youth in Bursa province, according to Interfax.
This date was revealed after the elections were initially scheduled for June 18. However, Erdoğan had repeatedly stated that voting could occur earlier. Members of his party indicated that the June elections would coincide with a high tourist season, making it more advisable to postpone them.
Pre-election polls show that both the presidential and parliamentary contests will be fiercely competitive. Western media describe the upcoming elections as Erdoğan's 'biggest challenge' in the last 20 years.
