Netanyahu Dismisses Key Ally from His Cabinet
Following a decision by the Supreme Court, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed a key ally from his ministerial cabinet, according to PA Media. Netanyahu announced the dismissal of Interior and Health Minister Aryeh Deri during a cabinet meeting.
Previously, the Israeli Supreme Court had opposed the appointment of Aryeh Deri, leader of the far-right Shas party, to ministerial positions due to his criminal past. The ruling that Deri could not hold ministerial office was adopted by the Israeli Supreme Court (High Court) on Wednesday with ten votes against.
The media notes that Netanyahu's far-right government seeks to weaken the Supreme Court's influence, restrict judicial oversight, and grant more powers to politicians. Critics say this move will undermine the balance of power in the country and threaten the democratic foundations of Israel.
