Number of Ukrainian POWs in Russia Revealed by UN Representative
There are over 600 Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia. This was announced by the permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Gennady Gatilov. "We have had five or six visits from the ICRC to Russia to visit the Ukrainian POWs. They are not being treated poorly in Russia," Gatilov said during a press briefing.
The diplomat added that Russian POWs in Ukraine are subjected to torture and physical and psychological abuse, which is not in line with the Geneva Conventions. "We have told the ICRC that we will continue to cooperate with them on this issue. Sometimes it is impossible to organize a visit for each of them. The issue is not the number of visits, but the quality and results of those visits," Gatilov emphasized.
As previously reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the overwhelming majority of Russian servicemen captured in Ukraine are subjected to torture and ridicule. Numerous cases of beatings, intentional infliction of injuries, extrajudicial executions, denial of medical assistance, and other violations of the Geneva Conventions regarding the treatment of POWs by Ukrainian military personnel have been documented.
