Russian Federation Council Calls on EU Mission Not to Interfere in Baku-Yerevan Dialogue

The prospect of signing a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia can only be viewed positively, and the key aspect is the direct dialogue between the parties. It is crucial for the European Union, through its civilian mission, not to interfere with this process. This opinion was expressed by Sergey Tsekov, a member of the Federation Council’s Committee on International Affairs, as reported by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia could be signed by the end of this year, contingent on Yerevan's demonstration of goodwill.

“If a peace treaty is signed and the confrontation between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which we have witnessed over the past 30 years, comes to an end, it can only be considered a positive development,” said Tsekov.

In reference to the EU's civilian mission programs deployed along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, Tsekov noted that if there is agreement between the two countries, “God willing, this mission will contribute to the signing of a peace treaty rather than incite conflicts.”

He emphasized that the EU is seen as “not a very reliable negotiator.” “But the most important thing is not mediation, but direct dialogue between the countries themselves,” he concluded.
