There is no legal basis for the handover of Tigranashen: Edmon Marukyan

“Dear compatriots, today is a historic day because today the recognition of a section of the territory of the Republic of Armenia as belonging to Azerbaijan has officially begun, as today the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, officially declared that Kyarkh is not Armenian territory,” wrote Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Bright Armenia party.

“Now dear compatriots, when the Prime Minister says understanding, it means that we must continue the delimitation with those maps. In any situation where it is said that the understanding with Azerbaijan on this issue is this or that, everything has been done as Azerbaijan said and how it should be done for Azerbaijan. So I want to officially tell you that, I have said in several broadcasts, that the Republic of Armenia has not been presented with any evidence, any document proving that Tigranashen, in other words Kyankin, which it claims now, will become part of Azerbaijani territory. Any map presented by Azerbaijan is simply an image because they need the legal bases for it.

According to legal foundations, delimitations, demarcations are determined, and on that basis, moving forward from the line, moving back from the line or transferring any enclave to someone's authority is not allowed. In this case, Tigranashen is part of the territory of the Republic of Armenia, and there is no document to prove that it belongs to Azerbaijan. Therefore, handing over that territory to any state in this case, to Azerbaijan, which is an enemy state, hostile to us and filled with anti-Armenian rhetoric, not only means cutting off one of your territories, cutting off the Syunik province from the rest of Armenia, putting at risk the Armenia-Iran strategic communications, but also deploying an Azerbaijani military base inside your own country because Azerbaijan will definitely place military outposts in that territory, and I have no doubt about that,” said Edmon Marukyan.
