Spanish Congress Issues Statement Supporting the Armenian People
The Spanish Congress of Deputies issued a statement of support for the Armenian people during its plenary meeting on October 6. The statement reads:
Taking into account the aggression carried out by Azerbaijani armed forces against the Armenian positions in Goris, Sotk, and Jermuk (Armenia) using artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles on the night of September 12-13, which resulted in the deaths of at least 207 Armenian servicemen, the Congress:
- Reaffirms its intolerance towards military operations that represent serious violations of international law, considering them unjustified aggressions that disrupt regional security and stability.
- Encourages the parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement signed within the framework of international relations.
- Expresses its solidarity and support for Armenia and its people. We mourn the human losses on both sides and extend our deepest condolences to the victims and the unnecessary suffering of the population. These sentiments are also directed towards the Armenian community in Spain.
- Supports the efforts of the EU High Representative and the Special Representative in the South Caucasus, who play a crucial role in the monitoring process of the ceasefire agreement and contribute to finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict.
- Calls on the parties to respect international law, lay down their weapons, and resume diplomatic negotiations, thereby reaffirming that this position is the only viable and lasting solution to this complex and historical dispute.
- Calls on the EU to double its efforts to promote de-escalation and the maintenance of peace through diplomatic means.
