Traffic Congestion at Yerevan Bus Stops as Drivers Stage Boycott
"We demand only Mayor Hayk Marutyan." Starting this morning, a group of bus drivers in Yerevan has been staging a protest. Auroranews spoke with some of them.
In their conversations, the drivers identified the significantly reduced salaries as the main reason for their protest. They explained that previously, they earned approximately 450,000 to 500,000 AMD, but that has now dropped to 250,000 AMD. They emphasize that they cannot work under these salary conditions.
According to them, in addition to their salaries, there are dozens of unresolved issues that the management and the transport department of the City Hall have been aware of for three years, yet no solutions have been provided.
The drivers pointed out that they lack medical insurance, the buses are not insured under Casco, and when receiving buses, no contracts are signed that clearly outline their duties and responsibilities. They also lack restroom facilities and have to rely on nearby shops when necessary.
Their work schedule is excessively demanding, requiring them to take taxis home around midnight, with the fare coming from their own pockets.
Today, the head of the transport department met with the protesting drivers, but they stated that they demand a meeting only with Mayor Hayk Marutyan.
Auroranews also spoke with the mayor's spokesperson, Hakob Karapetyan, who mentioned that a statement would be forthcoming shortly.
