Gorbachev Identifies Those Responsible for the Collapse of the USSR
The first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, stated that those responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union are the organizers of the attempted coup in August 1991, as well as those who signed the Belavezha Agreements. The politician made this remark in an interview with the Interfax news agency.
According to him, the organizers of the coup attempt claimed they were trying to preserve the country, but Gorbachev labeled the consequences of their actions as catastrophic. He also added that he has repeatedly expressed his opinion about the events of 1991. He recalled that he refused to sign the demands of the coup organizers, who, 'isolating him in Foros and cutting off all means of communication with the outside world,' sent their representatives to him.
