Murdered Woman Beaten Out of Jealousy, Daughter Tried to Protect Mother, Shirak Prosecutor
The Shirak prosecutor Karen Gabrielyan provided details today in a press conference regarding the murder of a 42-year-old woman and severe bodily harm inflicted on her 12-year-old daughter in the Textile Workers neighborhood of Gyumri a week ago, as reported by aravot.am.
The prosecutor noted that the detained 28-year-old male suspect has been interrogated but denies the charges. He has not acknowledged his guilt regarding the accusations and, exercising his procedural rights, has refused to provide testimony.
“However, we have sufficient evidence which has provided grounds for bringing charges against the individual under Article 112, Part 2, and points 14 of the RA Criminal Code. We have several witnesses who testify that he perpetrated this crime,” said the prosecutor.
He mentioned that the suspect's parents have also been interrogated. They provided testimony indicating that the individual intentionally inflicted bodily harm on the victims.
“He assaulted the woman during the night, around 2:00 AM, but the victim's death was recorded around 14:30. For this reason, we have charged him with causing serious bodily harm that resulted in the victim's death through negligence,” said the prosecutor.
According to the data available in the case, the mother was initially beaten during a quarrel arising from jealousy. The 12-year-old child attempted to intervene to prevent her mother from being beaten, at which point the 28-year-old man also inflicted blows. According to Karen Gabrielyan, the assailant caused injuries using his hands.
The man is reportedly registered with the Gyumri psychiatric health center. He has cooperated regarding inquiries but is not registered in the narcological dispensary; he is registered in the psychiatric cabinet. A forensic psychiatric examination will be assigned to determine his sanity status.
He has previously been convicted four times for various offenses, including two for theft, one for making threats to kill, and another for causing bodily harm to another person. For these cases, forensic psychiatric examinations were conducted, and experts confirmed that he is sane.
The prosecutor provided a significant piece of information: one of the criminal cases was initiated under Article 113 of the RA Criminal Code in 2016, in which this individual had beaten the same victim. “The victim suffered medium severity bodily harm deliberately inflicted by him. However, since the victim did not file a complaint later, a decision was made to terminate the criminal proceedings. There was a complaint from the victim, but they later reconciled; we cannot continue the proceedings in cases of reconciliation,” the prosecutor noted.
