We Need Political Changes in Syria, Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated that political changes in Syria are necessary to create the conditions that would allow refugees to return to their homes. She noted that the first topic of discussion with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was the activities of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, regarding the Syrian Constitutional Committee.

“We need political changes in Syria, we need work on a new Constitution, because only in this way will it be possible to guarantee changes in Syria, under which one day refugees from Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and possibly Germany will be able to return. Today, such conditions do not exist. For this reason, I thank the UN for these efforts,” Merkel stated at a joint press conference with Guterres.
