Norovirus Outbreak: 1700 People Quarantined
French authorities have quarantined more than 1,700 people aboard the Ambition cruise ship, which docked in the city of Bordeaux in southwestern France, following the death of a 90-year-old passenger believed to be linked to the norovirus outbreak, according to France24.
Officials reported that the ship, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line and carrying 1,233 passengers from Ireland and the UK, arrived at the western port of Bordeaux on May 12. A representative from health authorities indicated that one passenger, a 90-year-old man, has died, while nearly 50 others have exhibited symptoms consistent with norovirus.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes acute gastroenteritis, which is inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is often transmitted through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or direct contact with an infected person. The virus is known for its exceptional stability in the environment and requires only a very small dose to infect.
The main symptoms of a norovirus infection include sudden nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, as well as sometimes fever and body aches. There is no specific treatment; therapy is limited to replenishing fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration.
