Why the President of Syria Dismissed His Brothers from Office

Syria's President Ahmed al-Shara has removed his brothers, Maher and Hazem, from high-ranking positions during a government reshuffle. A source close to the head of state informed journalists that the purpose of this decision is to restore the trust of the Syrian people.

With this move, the country's leader aims to prevent accusations of nepotism and emphasize the difference from the ousted Assad regime. Previously, Maher was performing the duties of the chief secretary of the presidential office. According to Syrian sources, his wife is of Russian descent, speaks Russian, and serves as a liaison between Damascus and Moscow, which makes Maher's appointment as Syria's ambassador in Russia a likely possibility.

His brother, Hazem, held the position of vice president of the Supreme Economic Development Council, from which he has also been dismissed.
