Changes Related to Driver's Rights
The Republic of Armenia will soon implement digital driver's licenses and digital registration certificates. A legislative initiative has set a timeline, and when the parliament fully adopts it, the law will come into effect. This was announced during a press briefing by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Armen Ghazaryan.
“All citizens who hold driver's licenses will have their licenses converted to digital driver's licenses starting September 1. With another initiative, we also establish that if a patrol officer can identify the driver, the administrative violation outlined in the code for not having a driver's license on them will not be applied. If the person is identified, and it is confirmed that they have the right to drive, then this administrative violation will not be enforced,” he stated.
Currently, according to the deputy minister, it is planned that by September 1, all individuals holding driver's licenses in Armenia will have their licenses exchanged for digital ones. “This means that all those who have a driver's license will also be considered to have a digital driver's license. For those who acquire a driver's license newly, they will have the option to choose, with a lesser fee allowing them to obtain a digital driver's license. However, there are times when it is necessary to have the plastic driver's license if they wish to leave the country with a vehicle. In that case, the fee will be slightly higher, and the individual will have the option to receive a plastic driver's license,” he noted.
The deputy minister also emphasized that the digital driver's license will only be valid within Armenia, and outside the country, a plastic driver's license will be necessary.
