In 2016, Armenia Rejected Azerbaijan's Proposal: Serge Sargsyan
During a meeting with students and faculty of the Armenian University, Serge Sargsyan addressed the ceasefire signed with Azerbaijan on May 12, 1994, stating: “Those who say it was a mistake to sign the ceasefire were not in control of the situation... They say, ‘You should not have stopped;’ well, if we had not stopped, would we have reached Baku? Would we have taken the Azerbaijani leadership hostage and said, ‘Recognize us’? Secondly, what is important is not gaining territory during military operations, because later there is a need to hold onto it. Were we capable of expanding that large front line two or three times and holding it firmly? No. It was an achievement, wasn’t it, when Azerbaijan also applied to Nagorno-Karabakh for a ceasefire proposal? Did you know that this agreement was signed not only by representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan but also by representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh? Azerbaijan had been working for many years to remove that signature from the agreement. It was not coincidental that after the April 2016 war, the Azerbaijanis suggested signing a new ceasefire agreement, which was categorically rejected by the Armenian side.
