Russia Warns Armenia Regarding EAEU Compliance
If Armenia violates the treaty, the EAEU has international-legal instruments to protect the interests of its member states, stated Mikhail Agasandyan, the director of the CIS countries department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“If Yerevan nevertheless takes steps that contradict EAEU law, which we hope will not happen, in other words, violates the EAEU treaty, we have the necessary international-legal mechanisms to protect the interests of the other member states of the union,” Agasandyan said.
He noted that Armenia has never expressed its intention to withdraw from the treaty, neither publicly nor during bilateral communications; on the contrary, Yerevan actively participates in negotiations within the union, indicating its interest in the development of Eurasian integration.
Agasandyan also emphasized that the European Union cannot compensate for the inevitable losses to Armenia’s economy if the republic exits the EAEU.
He added that the Russian side explains to Armenian partners the impossibility of being a member of both the EAEU and the EU simultaneously due to incompatible regulations, and it is understood in Yerevan what the advantages of participating in the EAEU are, as well as the consequences of exiting it.
