Syria's New Flag Raised at UN Headquarters in New York
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Assad al-Sheybani, has raised the new flag of the Syrian Arab Republic – in green, white, and black with three red stars – at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This flag has been in use since the early 1930s when Syria and Lebanon were mandated territories of France following World War I. It signified Syria's independence in 1946 and has been used by the Syrian opposition since 2011.
The minister is in New York to attend a UN Security Council meeting on the Syrian issue scheduled for later today. Prior to this, al-Sheybani participated in the ceremony for the raising of the new flag.
