UN Secretary-General Calls on US and Iran to Cease Hostilities
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the renewed exchanges of gunfire between the US and Iran that occurred overnight. This was announced by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.
According to him, Guterres is particularly troubled by reports of civilian casualties, including information regarding an alleged strike on a wedding ceremony in Iran.
The UN Secretary-General condemned all attacks against civilians and reminded both parties of their obligation to uphold the requirements of international humanitarian law. Guterres has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging restraint and avoidance of actions and rhetoric that could further escalate the situation.
The UN has warned that further escalation could have devastating consequences for both civilians and the entire region. Guterres also urged the US and Iran to urgently return to diplomatic channels, emphasizing that a comprehensive and lasting resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.
