Conor McGregor Found Guilty of Sexual Assault Against Woman
In Ireland, former MMA fighter Conor McGregor has been found guilty of raping a woman in 2018, according to the Associated Press. The court ruling states that McGregor is required to pay the victim €250,000.
The case was adjudicated in a civil court rather than a criminal court, meaning that the athlete is not facing imprisonment.
Irish prosecutors, who initially conducted the investigation, decided not to charge McGregor, citing insufficient evidence to secure a conviction in a criminal trial. Civil trials in Ireland, similar to those in other countries with Anglo-Saxon legal systems, have a lower standard of proof.
The incident occurred in December 2018. The woman stated that McGregor raped and assaulted her in the penthouse of the Beacon hotel in Dublin. An examination revealed bruises and scratches on her body.
McGregor has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the sexual encounter was consensual.
