The Trump administration is planning a large-scale tax audit of several left-wing non-governmental organizations, including the "Open Society" foundation founded by billionaire George Soros.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is preparing a comprehensive audit program that could lead to these organizations losing their tax exemptions and facing significant fines, according to the New York Post, citing its sources.

In addition to Soros' foundation, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Southern Poverty Law Center have also come under scrutiny. An anonymous source from the publication stated that the Treasury is determined to see the process through and has no intention of backing down, noting that "the days are numbered" for the mentioned organizations and their donors.

In August 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump had called for accountability against George Soros and his son for allegedly supporting disorder during protests in the country. The U.S. leader had also not ruled out Soros' involvement in funding extreme left organizations, calling for action against him under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). This law provides for financial penalties and imprisonment for up to 20 years.
