Titanic's Most Wealthy Passenger's Watch Sold for Record Price
A golden watch belonging to John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest passenger on the ill-fated Titanic, has been sold at an auction in Great Britain for a record price of $1.5 million, reports Sky News.
The pocket watch was purchased by a private collector from the United States, according to the Henry Aldridge & Son auction house.
The British Titanic sank on April 14, 1912, after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, sinking two hours and 40 minutes later and claiming the lives of approximately 1,500 people.
The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in September 1985, about 350 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at a depth of nearly four kilometers.
