Discussion on the Restoration of the Death Penalty in Moscow
The two chambers of the Russian Parliament, the State Duma and the Federation Council, "are unable to overcome the Constitutional Court's decisions regarding the death penalty." This was stated by Andrey Klishas, the head of the Federation Council’s Committee on Legal Affairs, on his Telegram channel.
Recently, the most significant terrorist attack in Russia since the Beslan school tragedy occurred in Krasnogorsk, Moscow region. On March 22, a terrorist incident also took place at the "Crocus City Hall." Currently, 133 fatalities and 154 injuries have been reported.
A number of political figures and Kremlin-affiliated commentators have called for the reinstatement of the death penalty in the country. Such calls have been made by Leonid Slutsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, former president Dmitry Medvedev, Sergey Mironov, leader of the Just Russia party, and several public figures.
The leader of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, Vladimir Vasilyev, stated that the topic of the death penalty would be "thoroughly and meaningfully discussed, and a decision will be made in accordance with public sentiment and expectations."
