Russian Prosecutor General's Office Labels Businessman Oleg Kani's Death as Staged
The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has classified the death of businessman Oleg Kani, known as the "king of crabs," as staged, according to a statement made by a representative of the office during a hearing in arbitration court related to a lawsuit against the entrepreneur and other fishing industry owners.
The Prosecutor General's Office noted that the respective bodies from St. Petersburg and the Sakhalin region presented identical certificates indicating that Kani's death has not been officially registered. Furthermore, relatives have not reported to the relevant authorities, even though the law requires them to file a death declaration if they become aware of it.
On March 19, РИА Новости referenced Kani's representative, stating that the "king of crabs" had died over a year ago. At the end of February 2023, information regarding the businessman’s death was also circulated through several regional Telegram channels. It was subsequently reported that he died of pancreatic cancer in London and was buried in South Korea.
Oleg Kani is wanted on two criminal charges for contract murder and leading a criminal community. An arrest warrant has been issued against the entrepreneur for these cases.
On January 23, 2024, the Prosecutor General's Office filed two lawsuits totaling 376 billion rubles against Kani and another major businessman in the fishing industry, Dmitry Dremlyuga, who is also involved in several criminal cases in Russia and currently lives abroad. The defendants in this lawsuit include 31 companies and 29 individuals.
