VIDEO: Workers' Strike Disrupts Public Transport in Germany, Country in Paralysis
A general strike by transport workers has paralyzed Germany, according to local media reports. Around 90,000 employees in public transport have announced a strike.
According to the DPA agency, the movement of buses, trams, and subways is restricted in 80 cities. The Verdi union has called for the strike, demanding improved working conditions and higher wages for employees of 130 transport companies. Only one federal state, Bavaria, is not experiencing any strikes.
In Berlin, the strike will last just a few hours. This is the second large-scale protest organized by Verdi this week. The previous day, airport security staff stopped working, canceling over 1,000 flights and disrupting the plans of 200,000 passengers.
Frankfurt Airport, the largest in Germany, reported that traffic in the vicinity has been disrupted due to farmers' protests. The flight schedules in Germany have also been significantly affected by the security staff's strike. On Sunday and Monday, pilots from Discover Airlines, a subsidiary of Germany's largest airline Lufthansa, will also join the strike.
“Due to the farmers' protests, there have been severe disruptions to traffic in the area around Frankfurt Airport; therefore, passengers are advised to travel by public transport,” stated Frankfurt Airport's announcement.
