Biden Considers Criminal Prosecution of U.S. Presidents Possible
President Joe Biden has indicated that criminal prosecution of U.S. presidents is possible. Biden also stated that he sees no reasons why presidents should be exempt from judicial proceedings. Bloomberg reports that Biden made these comments in relation to former President Donald Trump’s claim of immunity in the prosecution regarding his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Trump has requested the Supreme Court to immediately consider the issue, but the court has declined to hear the matter. Earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had rejected requests to discuss Donald Trump’s claim of immunity.
The former president was charged in August. The defense team had argued to dismiss the criminal case, citing that Trump was working to ensure the integrity of the elections as part of his official duties as president and is, therefore, protected by presidential immunity. However, the court rejected the attorneys’ arguments.
