Romania Begins Construction of Bomb Shelters in Bordering Villages with Ukraine
The Romanian military is constructing concrete bomb shelters for the residents of villages near the Ukrainian border, where they can wait for air raid alerts due to drone activity, said Raed Arafat, head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Emergency Situations Department.
On September 8, the National Committee for Emergency Situations of Romania decided that the Ministry of Defense should identify potentially dangerous areas at the border with Ukraine due to drone attacks and Ukrainian air defense operations, prepare shelters for citizens there, and create a warning system for the population.
“In conjunction with the Ministry of Defense, a decision has been made to create safety zones in sparsely populated areas that will be safer than people's homes, focusing on protected concrete shelters where people can spend a few hours until the air strike is over,” Arafat told reporters. “The military has offered immediate and swift solutions that were ultimately approved by the National Committee for Emergency Situations.”
