Dangerous Manholes and Choking Dust: Why Are the Roads in Ejmiatsin Being Renovated Slowly?

During the ongoing renovation works on Tumanyan Street in Ejmiatsin, a poorly covered manhole has caused an unfortunate incident, leading a woman to fall into it and sustain injuries. The cover was only fixed after a visit to the Vagarshapat City Hall. This incident is neither a coincidence nor an isolated case, as similar dangerous situations have arisen multiple times during the months-long road construction work in several streets of Ejmiatsin.

The city's main roads, including Patkanian, Tumanyan, Baghramyan, and Charenk, are currently under substantial renovation. Residents of Ejmiatsin are dissatisfied with the delays in the construction work, as there seems to be no end in sight.

The damaged roads have also complicated traffic flow, causing many drivers to avoid these streets in favor of detours. The situation is particularly challenging for residents living on these streets.

Hetq.am inquired with the Vagarshapat City Hall about the number of workers involved in the renovation works on these streets. The City Hall responded that the number of workers is not specified within the project's pre-design budgeting documents. They clarified that only the number of engineering and technical personnel is regulated, which, in this case, is three people.

According to the community leader, Arghishti Mekhakyan, regular working meetings are held both at the City Hall and at construction sites with representatives from the companies carrying out the construction.

He noted that before the road renovations began, sewage system construction works, including internal connections, were carried out on the indicated streets. Only after completing these works did the renovation of the roads start.

The sewage system construction works on H. Tumanyan, R. Patkanian, Sos Manukyan, and M. Baghramyan streets are funded from the community budget. These works were supposed to be finished by June 26, 2026, but due to adverse weather conditions and unforeseen additional works that arose during construction, the deadlines have been extended.

The Vagarshapat City Hall signed a contract with Euroasphalt LLC on October 9, 2025, for the road renovation works. The total value of the contract is 824 million 400 thousand drams. The technical supervision of the works is carried out by Mika LLC, whose service costs amount to 2 million 400 thousand drams. The program is funded by community resources.
