There is a Real Opportunity for Peace Between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Says Philip Reeker
There is a real opportunity for peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan today. This was stated by former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Senior Advisor on Caucasus Negotiations, Philip Reeker, in an interview with the Armenian service of Voice of America.
“The two leaders need to meet and listen to each other, engage in dialogue as much as possible to better understand one another, comprehend the direction they are moving in, and what concerns exist,” said the former senior U.S. diplomat.
According to him, ensuring security in the South Caucasus would create broad opportunities for trade, energy projects, and infrastructure development in the region.
“For instance, in terms of transportation, it will contribute to the development of this important geographical region, linking Central Asia with the Black Sea and creating vital trade opportunities that will benefit everyone in the region,” he argues.
According to Reeker, this long-standing conflict in the South Caucasus is a tragedy. It has taken many lives, caused losses, and neutralized developmental opportunities for decades. The former diplomat pointed out that the international community is making significant efforts to achieve a lasting and stable peace between the parties.
“As you can see, Secretary [Blinken] is personally committed to advancing the process. He also supports others, for example, the leaders of the parties, to consolidate the efforts of European Council President Michel, creating an opportunity for Armenia and Azerbaijan to move forward on a peaceful path,” he added.
