Armenian Diaspora Commemorates 108th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

The genocide committed against Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in 1915 was one of the greatest crimes of the early 20th century. The Armenian diaspora commemorates the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

During the years of World War I, the mass killings of the Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire are referred to as the Armenian Genocide. These atrocities were carried out by the Young Turk government across various regions of the Ottoman Empire.

The first international response to these events came on May 24, 1915, with a joint statement from France, Russia, and Great Britain, which characterized the violence against the Armenian people as a "crime against humanity and civilization." The parties held the Turkish government responsible for the committed crimes.

Before the outbreak of World War I, there were more than 2 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. Between 1915 and 1923, around 1.5 million Armenians fell victim to the Turkish Yatakhanes, while the remaining individuals were either forcibly converted to Islam or sought refuge in various countries around the world.

The day of remembrance for the victims of the Armenian Genocide is observed on April 24, as it was on this day in 1915 that Armenian intellectuals were sent to their deaths from the Haydarpasha railway station in Constantinople.
