Hajiyev Accuses Armenia of Creating "Artificial Tensions"
The establishment of an international mechanism for discussing the rights and safety of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh cannot be a condition for Armenia to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan. This statement was made by Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan.
“Presenting the rights and security of Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh and the establishment of an international mechanism as a precondition for Armenia's signing of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan is completely unacceptable and a dangerous approach,” said Hajiyev. He emphasized that the creation of such an international mechanism is excluded. Moreover, Hajiyev referred to Yerevan's claims as illogical and accused it of “creating artificial tensions.”
It is worth noting that earlier, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan, while discussing the establishment of international mechanisms in Nagorno-Karabakh, specified that one of them could, for example, be the establishment of a demilitarized zone around the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh. This demilitarized zone would naturally create security guarantees for Nagorno-Karabakh.
“Other issues can be discussed; I think there are various issues that can be discussed, the presence of the international community in Nagorno-Karabakh can be discussed, and a mechanism can be created for how the international community is present to ensure security for Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh. Mechanisms regarding rights can also be discussed, and within the framework of those mechanisms, rights can be ensured. In other words, at this moment, there is an agreement on negotiations regarding the international mechanism, but the arrangements that should ensure security and rights are already the subject of negotiations,” he added.
