EU Attempts to Strengthen Presence in Post-Soviet Space, Logvinov

The launch of the European Union mission in Armenia is an attempt to solidify its presence in the post-Soviet space, taking advantage of the outcomes of the Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations mediated by Russia. This was stated by Kirill Logvinov, the acting permanent representative of Russia to the EU, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“This is Brussels' attempt to establish itself in the post-Soviet area while playing the role of a mediator,” he said. According to him, these actions also have a significant anti-Russian component. “They aim to neutralize our country’s historical role as a guarantor of security,” Logvinov added.

It is noteworthy that from February 20, a European mission consisting of 100 individuals with a two-year mandate has been stationed in Armenia. Although the EU mission is considered civilian, 50 of its members are gendarmes.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the launch of the EU's new mediation mission in Armenia, stating that the presence of EU representatives in Armenia's border regions could only lead to geopolitical confrontation in the region and exacerbate existing tensions.
