Amulsar Gold Mine to Resume Operations; Former Opposition MP Remains Silent - 'Zhoghovurd'
The Amulsar gold mine will resume operations, reports the 'Zhoghovurd' newspaper.
“Armenia signed a $250 million package yesterday with ‘Lydian Armenia,’ the company that holds the license for the operation of the Amulsar gold mine. In this situation, it is perhaps strange that the former environmental activist members of the ruling party remain silent, who did not miss a chance to speak about the dangers of mining operations during Serzh Sargsyan's administration,” the article notes.
According to the newspaper, Lena Nazaryan, during her time as an opposition MP, fought against the operation of the mine, participated in environmental protests, blocked roads, and spoke about the dangerous risks of mine exploitation. However, she has remained silent.
“Zhoghovurd” contacted Nazaryan yesterday to understand her position regarding the operation of Amulsar, but she avoided any comments after hearing the question, stating that she did not wish to discuss the matter and hung up the phone.
The “highly principled” political figure Lena Nazaryan may have changed her stance, as the mine's operation no longer seems to pose a danger for her, or she is constrained by the fact that her political team has already agreed to permit the resumption of Amulsar’s operations and prefers to remain silent.
