Fake Azerbaijani Variants of Place Names in Syunik Communities Removed from Google Maps and Google Earth, Says Tatoian Foundation

Fake Azerbaijani variants of place names in the communities of Armenia's Syunik province have been removed from the Google Maps and Google Earth applications. This information was shared on the Facebook page of the Tatoian Foundation.

The foundation announced that, in collaboration with the Armenian National Committee of America’s Western Region, they successfully removed the false Azerbaijani names from these applications. As mentioned in a statement dated September 29, following a report from a resident of Sisian, the Tatoian Foundation’s Center for Law and Justice discovered that schools, parks, squares, and other locations in Syunik province were erroneously marked with fictitious or non-existent Azerbaijani names.

For instance, the Vorotan River was labeled with the Azerbaijani name 'Bazarçay,' while Sisian’s park was named after Azerbaijan's former president Heydar Aliyev or Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Additionally, the Syunik regional administration was only identified in Azerbaijani as 'Zəngəzur Vilayəti Administrasiyası,' and there was even an attempt to change the name of the city of Sisian to 'Qarakilise.'

Similarly, other localities in Meghri and Kapan were also marked with Azerbaijani names. It was evident that this was a method of promoting the false narrative by Azerbaijani authorities claiming that Syunik belongs to Azerbaijan. Moreover, it was an effort to legitimize Azerbaijan's criminal incursions and attacks on Armenia's sovereign territory.

Other fake place names labeled in Azerbaijani have also been removed. The Tatoian Foundation emphasized the crucial and prompt response of the Armenian National Committee of America’s Western Region, establishing contact with Google, and the diligence in their efforts.
