I believe Putin is a rational player who made a bad calculation, said U.S. President Joe Biden in an exclusive interview with CNN.

“I think, Jake (journalist), he thought he would be welcomed with open arms, that this is Mother Russia's home in Kyiv, and that he would be welcomed there. I think he just miscalculated,” Biden stated.

According to Biden, Putin mistakenly believed that Ukrainians would submit to Russian soldiers. This was a delusion, which the Ukrainians themselves rejected with fierce resistance against Russian aggression.

In response to a question about the possibility of nuclear weapons being used and U.S. actions, Biden noted that “Putin speaks irresponsibly about this,” but he does not believe that Putin will go that route. “The leader of one of the world's largest nuclear powers says he might use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine,” Biden said.

At the same time, Biden declined to specify what the U.S. response would be if Putin carried out those threats. He stated that the Pentagon has been developing various options in anticipation of such a scenario.
