Joe Biden Declares State of Emergency Over Threats to Electric Power Supply in the U.S.
U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency due to the potential shortage of electricity-generating capacity in the country.
“Several factors threaten the U.S. capabilities to produce sufficient amounts of electricity,” he stated. “I am declaring an emergency due to the threat of insufficient energy production capacity to meet consumer demand,” read the statement from the White House.
The President has waived import tariffs for “certain solar panels and modules” imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam for a period of two years.
Earlier, residents of several states in the West and Midwest of the U.S. were warned about potential power outages this summer due to anomalous heat and drought conditions.
