Madrid Summit Will Be One of the Most Important Summits, Says Stoltenberg on Russia's Actions
NATO member state leaders will review the alliance's position towards Russia and China during a meeting in Madrid at the end of June. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview published on May 30 in the Spanish ABC newspaper.
“The Madrid summit will have extraordinary importance,” he said. “The new strategic concept that we will adopt will reflect the new reality of security.” For example, the current strategic concept treats Russia as a partner and does not mention China, Stoltenberg noted.
“Now, undoubtedly, we will discuss Russia's aggressive actions, as well as the implications of China's rise on our security. The Madrid summit will become one of our most important summits. Additionally, according to the Secretary General, issues related to 'south-driven threats' such as instability and terrorism will be addressed at the meeting in Spain.
“Stability in Africa should matter to the entire alliance,” he clarified. “We must be prepared for a prolonged war,” he emphasized. “Spain is contributing to the joint efforts of NATO allies,” the Secretary General highlighted. “There are many types of support for Ukrainian forces. We must be very careful when discussing specific systems of armaments,” TASS reported.
