Pentagon Chief Issues Statement
Pentagon head Lloyd Austin, in an interview with CNN, stated that U.S. President Joe Biden has "clearly made it known that we will not have troops in Ukraine involved in military operations against Russia."
The U.S. Secretary of Defense also noted that if the U.S. establishes a no-fly zone, it would require airspace control, engagement with Russian aircraft, and the elimination of aviation systems in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.
“That would mean we are at war with Russia. These are two countries with nuclear weapons, and no one wants to see them involved in a conflict. It’s not good for the region. It’s not good for the world,” he said.
He also mentioned that the U.S. is focused on providing assistance to Ukraine, which, "as we know, is beneficial," and is doing "everything within our power to protect every inch of NATO territory."
Austin was also asked about China’s position regarding the military conflict in Ukraine. He told CNN that "it’s hard to say" what China will do and refrained from speculation. "I hope that China does not support Putin’s vile actions. I hope that they will recognize the need to respect sovereign territory," the Pentagon chief told CNN, adding: "We have made it clear that if they do, we consider it a bad choice."
Earlier, the channel cited official sources stating that "Russia has requested military assistance and economic aid from China, and China has expressed a certain willingness to offer assistance to Russia." However, both sides have denied this.
Yesterday, U.S. President Joe Biden attempted to persuade Chinese President Xi Jinping not to help Russia, warning his Chinese counterpart of the "consequences" for Beijing if it provides material support to Moscow.
