Levon Aronian Defeats Azerbaijani Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
Armenian chess player, grandmaster Levon Aronian achieved a resounding victory against Azerbaijani grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the final round of the Champions Chess Tour series.
Aronian won the first two games and drew the third, resulting in an early victory of 2.5:0.5. The other matches of the last round are still ongoing, and only after their conclusion will it be clear what place the Armenian chess player secures.
The tournament features a round-robin format with the participation of ten top chess players. Each round consists of four rapid chess games (15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment). The winner is determined by tiebreak criteria.
Aside from Aronian, representing the Armenian flag, the tournament includes the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland), Maxim Vachier-Lagrave (France), Wesley So (USA), Vladislav Artemiev (Russia), Teimour Radjabov, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (both from Azerbaijan), and Anish Giri (Netherlands).
The prize fund for the tournament is set at $100,000.
